Michael M.'s Story
Married to a little red head since 1972. Have 4 wonderful daughters and 11 grandkids. My work years are not worth talking about. About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with AML Leukemia and the doctors tried to kill me with chemo but it didn't work. I went to CITY OF HOPE and had a stem cell transplant and I am doing as good or better then most who have had my cancer. I am still talking but the topics are much lighter because of the brain cells that left me during the chemo. I am retired because the stem cell transplant killed my imune system .
My biggest joy in life is time with my grandkids.
You know it is funny because I ran into someones little sister while I was in City of Hope and we stayed in touch because we set our outpatient appointments up for the same days. We lost her about 6 months ago and it was like a family death. We kept each other going I am now just getting over it. The family and the doctor now watch that I don't connect with another patient because they were afraid I was going to follow her. I like being with my family too much for that.
I wrote that about 1 year out of CITY OF HOPE and I have now been out for over 3 years and am beyond doing as good as can be expected. My stem cells have not caused a problem in ...Expand for more
over 2 years. The only time I get mental over what I have is when I go to City of Hope and see all the new faces. I so would like to see someone from 2 years ago.
I do not want to sound like a JESUS freak but go to church and try to understand how he was a big part of why I am still kicking. I had the best Doctors anyone could ask for and everything they did was to try and save my life. More then a couple of times I didn't know how much longer I could take it and went to GOD and asked for a sign that I was going to live through this. On one of my worst mornings I was praying and asked to take me or give me a sign and before long all my pain was gone. I know you think I am crazy but that is just how it worked and all the fear was gone.
When it is your time to retire find something to do that you can do everyday to keep your mind working because it is to easy to just waste away. I am now living in Eastvale just north of NORCQ and CORONA. My wife 2 daughters and 1 grandkid all in one big house.. We had to do this because our variable rate loan was going up again and was jjust too much . My girls came togeather and now Cheryl and I live with 2 and number 3 is about 4 blocks away and I have all the grandkids I can handke every weekend.
